When reading a piece of literature it is common for readers to makeconnections and sympathize with the protagonist of the story whileviewing the antagonist in a negative light This protagonist-goodantagonist-bad interpretation is common for Sophocless Antigonetranslated by Robert Fagles When only focusing on Antigone and herhonorable plight to defy the law of her uncle Creon to fulfill herfamily commitment to her brother it is easy to view Creon as a sexistprideful tyrant for forbidding Polynices burial and for sentencingAntigone to death But a closer look at Creons values and logic showsthat he is acting in a way he believes will portray him as the strongrespected leader necessary to reunite and lead Thebes after thisdestructive family civil warDuring the war in Thebes the family of Oedipus is fighting on oppositesides Brothers Polynices and Eteocles have killed one another inbattle and Thebes is in need of a strong leader to reunite the cityCreon being Oediupuss brother becomes the new ruler of Thebes Creonis in a challenging situation he is inheriting a city in a state ofdisarray and must gain the support of his people in order to besuccessful at reuniting Thebes In his speech to the city Creonacknowledges the fact that the people of Thebes have no reason tosupport him as a ruler besides his blood line He explains Of courseyou cannot know a man completely his character his principles senseof judgment not till hes shown his colors ruling the people makinglaws Lines 194-197 Creon is acknowledging that the people willjudge him by his actions more than his words Knowing this Creon has todecide how he will portray himself to his people He continues on tosay As I see it whoever assumes the taskof setting the cityscourse and refuses to adopt the soundest policies but fearing someonekeeps his lips locked tight hes utterly worthless Lines 198-202Creon is explaining that he believes a ruler that subjects to his fearsinstead of being brave for the good of his people
