I IntroductionEvery culture has its own unique characteristics by which it is defined and distinguished from other cultures and as a result cultural differences exist What might be perceived as normal or polite in one culture might be perceived in another as strange impolite or might be misinterpreted For example while an American person may greet someone who is a stranger to them by saying something like How do you do a Chinese person might greet a stranger with Have you eaten or Where are you going which might be misinterpreted by English native speakers to be an invitation to eat in the former example or considered to be impolite in the latter one because English speakers may view this as interfering in their personal affairs Yin 2009 Hence a particular language can be viewed as a cultural element in which it is shaped and formed in a way that serves a particular cultures communicative purposes Such cultural differences which may lead to miscommunication between two individuals coming from two different cultures become even more problematic for those learning another language While linguistic transfer from L1 to L2 has been the focus of research for a long time pragmatic transfer received much attention since Hymess 1972 proposal of communicative competence in which he pointed out the importance of social and pragmatic components of language along with its linguistic components in order to achieve ultimate language proficiency Since then research concentrated on pragmatic transfer which is defined by Beebe and Takahashi 1987 as transfer of first language LI sociocultural communicative competence in performing L2 speech acts Thus researchers have been focusing on speech act theory Austin 1962 which refers to how things are done by utterances such as performing the act of apology by saying Im sorry and politeness theory Brown Levinson 1987 which refers to as cited in Stapleton 2004 the notion that some speech acts e g
