In Palden Gyatsos Autobiography of a Tibetan Monk he illustrates the Cultural Revolution in Tibet and its affects on the monasteries villagers and his own personal account The revolution affected every part of Tibetan society from the social hierarchy to the beliefs and culture that were already instilled in the Tibetan villagers and monks The strong Chinese presence at the time was intimidating given that they were constantly denouncing the old feudal system and the Dalai Lama Tibet was forced to abandon the four olds old culture customs habits and thoughts 127 Gyatso even described himself as a puppet who was unable to think for himself The Chinese officials laid out a new system known as socialism and implemented study sessions each day with the intention of brain-washing the monks and placing them under the impression that their government and culture were no longer valid and only oppressed and exploited them The ones who refused to conform were accused of being reactionary bandits 56 and were eventually arrested Gyatso was frequently interrogated about his acquaintances prior to revolution and when he failed to confess to his crimes he was beaten by the officials and guards and ultimately arrested in 1959The conditions in the prisons were unacceptable from a modern day point of view Some were physically restrained and were expected to go about the daily routine created by the Chinese They were told to abandon their belongings received little food had to attend study sessions and meetings and work in the prison Additionally the prisoners werent allowed to say anything that directly or indirectly criticized socialism since anything said was taken out of context Gyatso illustrates several instances where he was beaten and abused because he was accused of defamation of socialism He writes There was no point in trying to explain myself Once accused there was no defense I was instructed to examine my thoughts and conduct 119 He also states that the
