Maxine Kingstons The Warrior Woman describes the struggles she encounters as a young Chinese-American woman pursuing the search for her own personal identity In No Name Woman Kingstons mother shares a dark guarded story about her aunts life This story in which Kingston refabricates in hopes of helping herself improve her understanding of the Chinese culture In refabricating her aunts story she pursues to merge both her Chinese and American identities and form her own unique identity as a result The memoir opens with Kingstons mother telling a tragic story about the shunning of her aunt Her motive in telling the moral story from her homeland of China was to educate Kingston Whenever she had to warn us about life my mother told stories that ran like this one a story to grow up on Kingston 5 Kingstons mother stresses the great shame she would bring upon the family if she were to humiliate them as her aunt did by having premarital sex After being told the tale Kingston becomes doubtful she realizes that the traditional women in old China did not have the ability to choose who they slept with thus her aunt could not have slept with this man out of foolishness Although Kingston is forbidden to address the No Name Woman she continues to do so through altering her aunts story and retelling it to the readers Kingstons knowledge on Chinese heritage relies solely on her mothers stories but the stories were amiss Through retelling her aunts story she inquires better understanding of her cultural heritage which helps her establish her own personal identity Although she attempts to comprehend the importance of her cultural heritage it is difficult for her to understand while living in an American society much different from the old Chinese community Kingston shows her struggle when she says Chinese Americans when you try to understand what things in you are Chinese how do you separate what is peculiar
