Culture is embedded in sport This can be seen in almost all group or team sports which have very specific rules and regulations However it is not just team sports that acquire this sense of culture Individual sports can possess this as well even though it may be quite different In this essay I will be focussing on skateboarding and the culture that embodies it I will prove that this culture does exist and despite common stereotypes about skateboarding will show that this sport is constructive engaging and educational just like any other team sport I will address this topic as a former skateboarder myself and as someone who grew up submerged in the American skateboarding culture I will prove the existence and structure of this culture by citing specific examples from a local skate park in the area in which I conducted extensive observation research my own personal experiences with skateboarding as well as associating this culture with the theories of Pierre Bourdieu such as field habitus and capital But first it is important to consider how one ends up taking up such an individual sport like skateboarding as opposed to taking the more common team-sport path There are many possible reasons that one would take up the sport of skateboarding For myself I did not really enjoy the team sports that most kids were playing in my area of the world such as American football or soccer I simply wanted to do my own thing without the influence of a coach A few of the kids that I spoke with at Fairfield skate park in Brisbane shared similar stories a few agreeing that they did not like all the rules and coaching involved in the sports they tried Observation notes other One youth with whom I spoke said that I love the freedom I can just grab my board and do whatever I want You know no one is telling me what to
