High school sports account for some of the most momentous and exhilarating times a teenager will experience Today however many student athletes are turning to anabolic steroids to help them gain the edge against their competition Although it was first publicized by Olympians these seemingly low level athletes of this generation feel as though it is perfectly fine to destroy their bodies to achieve a short term goal While doing so student athletes in high schools all over the United States are putting themselves at risk for a myriad of health risks and possible counts of criminal action In order to put a stop to this someone has to take action It is the school boards duty to select possible policies and punishments from those provided In turn the student athletes will remain safe and sound which is what everyone wants Steroids themselves are not always harmful In fact steroids are produced within the body as hormones However anabolic steroids are not naturally occurring Instead they are synthetically made doses of testosterone the hormone that is known for its ability to promote masculine characteristics like high muscle mass and strength As with everything steroids have both pros and cons Although they can increase muscle mass and strength steroids are also extremely dangerous and pose a threat to users Side effects include acne oily hair purple and red skin splotches swelling in the lower extremities and anger Some of the more serious and life threatening side effects such as elevated blood pressure leading to heart attack and stroke excess blood clotting liver tumors and even death Even if they are just trying to get stronger no one should put potentially expose their bodies to such risks In order to help protect students and those around them a policy must be put in place This school is to be a drug-free zone That policy includes the use of anabolic steroids which means that the school board
