The 1940s were a time of civil unrest and chaos in Europe Hitler used fear and manipulation to bring the people of Leningrad to their knees Although nearly 1500000 died the people of Leningrad still prevailed in their quest for liberation from the repressive rule of Hitlers Nazi regime David Beinoff the author of City of Thieves was totally accurate in his depiction of setting characterization and conflict in the city of Leningrad in the early 1940The Russian empire was in economic decline in the early 1940s The siege of Leningrad only made it worse The siege of Leningrad was a consequence of Adolf Hitlers incursion into the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa Although considered one of the most tragic periods of World War the siege was also a triumph in spirit against the brutal circumstances of battle The Modern Era The only way Leningrad could get supplies was over the frozen lake Lagoda In the early stages of the siege the citizens of Leningrad went to great lengths to fortify the city by digging trenches and taking control of the factories However these action were not the only precautions that Leningrad took against the Germans For example authorities evacuated much of the population including woman and children Those who were not evacuated such as the poet Anna Akhmatova were left to witness the harshness and ferocity of the war STLAWU People also escaped the horrors of the siege via the frozen lake Ladoga also known as the road of life Although under constant Nazi bombardment thousands of people escaped over the treacherous lake The Soviets also acquired supplies through this route The Modern EraThere are several major settings in the book City of Thieves by David Benioff One setting is in western Russia Prior to Levs family fleeing Russia to find a new opportunities in America Levs entire family lived western Russia David Benioff City of Thieves
