Research question Investigating the trend of the decline in young marriages in Singapore What are the possible reasons for the decline in recent yearsThe decline of marriages in Singapore as well as other countries have created a widespread concern in terms of the immediate repercussions it may bring firstly pertaining to problems of decreased total fertility rates and the possibility of an ageing population REFERENCE and secondly the threat that it poses to the sanctity of marriage as a concept While this is a fairly recent phenomenon it is important to note that the most noticeable and drastic decline has been in the number of young marriages In fact according to last years marriage statistics the proportion had declined from 42 per cent for non-Muslim bride and grooms and 15 per cent for Muslims when compared to 2002 STATS 2012What used to be the norm for decades in the olden days where with the onset of puberty came the transition to marriage has now been replaced with delays and an increase in the socially acceptable age to marry This then leads us to question how did a long-established and functioning system lose its popularity and place in society almost overnightNock 1992 once argued that mate selection takes place when there exists a field of eligible spouses to choose from along certain lines of ascribed and prescribed qualities However if one were to take a step into a lecture theatre of a tertiary institution in Singapore he or she would be generally be greeted by groups of young people who are homogenous in terms of age socio-economic status and educational background and who are most importantly single Following Nocks argument then why is it that even when given such conditions are they not marrying Thus this research paper will attempt to discuss the reasons following the trend of the decline in young marriages in Singapore in recent years through the features increased economic risk and lastly
