THE DEFENCE OF SEVASTOPOL 1854 - 1855 Why is UkraineRussia proud of the defence of Sevastopol Introduction The siege of Sevastopol is a celebrated battle which saw the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland France Turkey and Italy Sardinia act as a coalition against the city of Sevastopol The defence of Sevastopol during the Crimean war has entered the history of Ukraine as one of the cherished pages of the art of war The coalitions forces were much greater than those of Sevastopol Sevastopol being a city on coast had a big fleet of 14 sailing battle ships 6 sailing and 6 steam engine frigates as well as other ships and 245 thousand of naval depots and the city garrison of 7 thousand people While the coalitions forces consisted of 34 battleships 55 frigates and a 67 thousand people army But it still took the coalition almost a year 349 days from 13th Sept 1854 until 27th Aug 1855to conquer just one city Even Stalin later on stated England and France together were dealing with the siege of just one Sevastopol for a whole year Even though Sevastopol was defeated in the end but Ukrainians are still proud of it for what reason The reason for that is the amount of heroism that was displayed during this year it has impressed even the enemy as well as other foreign countries F Engels said that The Russian soldier is one of the most brave soldier in Europe it is easier to shoot the Russians than to make them retreat Body On the 10th of September the army of the enemy moved towards Sevastopol First they came to the north side of it but decided not to attack most probably thinking that it was well fortified These thoughts were a result of the battle that happened on the 8th of September 1854 next to the river Alma The French and English had first class guns
