Bridget's feedback:
"I appreciate the thoughtfulness and curiosity that characterizes your essay. It's always a pleasure to read an "essayistic" essay that has a sense of searching and exploration; this approach, however, must still bring the reader along as you explore the ideas. This is done with solid control over the higher-order concerns, helping the reader understand purpose, including the intentionality of blending personal and analytical writing, and through the use of transitional and signposting language to help orient the reader. For example, a reader coming to your essay won't know that this is about Sonnet 116, so among other things they will not understand why Shakespeare is being mentioned later. Name the text, author, and other vital stats early on to ground the reader in the textual analysis.
Similarly, and just as vital, clearly indicate quotations from the text following your style guide. In this current draft, for example, the last three sentences are quoted from the sonnet, but there is nothing to let the reader know this. This causes problems with the paper's ethos by failing to present the text as not your own and with clarity and coherence as the syntax suddenly switches up without warning."
