One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest vs Portnoys Complaint The two books One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest and Portnoys Complaint contain many differences between each other yet they occur in the same time period of the 1960s Since they both occur in the 1960s many similarities occur between the two of them But the main similarity is that both books have to do with the mental things of people In One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest the story is narrated by a mute Indian called Chief Bromden He does not talk about his life but what goes on around him This book is about a mental ward and those that inhabit it describing all the different things that happen in this institution The book mentions the theme madness which occurs along with the switching of conventional notions of sanity and insanity in their heads All the people that inhabit are middle-aged or older and are all men A woman called Nurse Ratched controls them all making the themes control and women dominating men come to play in this book But in contrast the book Portnoys Complaint is about a man who narrates and tells about his life to his psychiatrist all throughout his book He dwells on his childhood and teen years in opposition to the old people in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest He found himself rebelling often because his parents were so strict with him He in turn talks about himself and what he did rather than talking about his surroundings and other people In One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest Chief Bromden would talk more about what people did and what they were like rather than talking about himself The theme of the book is to live life to its fullest and always do what satisfies you The book One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest also can be in compared with the other book Portnoys Complaint Such comparisons include
