Lack of energy is often a constraint in rural development as it holds people back from achieving a better life style in Ethiopia A potentially rich country Ethiopia has an area of 1097 million square kilometers a population of 87 million of which around 83 living in rural area There is a huge energy resource potential in Ethiopia which if utilized could minimize the present energy crisis prevailing in the country and enhance the process of rural electrification The total exploitable renewable energy that can be derived annually from primary solar radiation wind forest biomass hydropower animal waste crop residue and human waste is about 1959x103 Tcal per year EEA 2002Electric energy electric light in particular is still a luxury enjoyed only by a few in Ethiopia The rate of electrification in the country is 23 for urban area less than 1 in rural Ethiopia The high share of rural population coupled with the low ability and willingness to pay affordability the low per capita energy consumption and the high rate of non-electrified rural areas has traditionally pushed rural communities to make use of locally available energy sources mostly biomass 99 from agriculture residues and forest wood for their daily cooking and heating needsRural areas in Ethiopia are characterized by either low-density settlement with relatively large distances between households or villages with fewer inhabitants This has hindered the use of modern sources of energy leaving rural inhabitants to continue on the course of the current use pattern of traditional energy sources and bound to have highly negative consequences for the rural economy at largeTherefore in this research I have approached the problem by proposing off grid electrification by using Renewable energy in general and renewable based hybrid power source in particular The reason behind is that Ethiopia has huge exploitable renewable energy potential 45 GW hydro power average solar energy radiation 5kwhm2 day average wind speed 5-6
