During middle childhood your child may start to separate themselves from the family a little Interests in friends are prevalent now Friendships are very important to your child at this time but peer pressure can be evitable Children who have high self esteem are much more likely to avoid negative peer pressure than children who are insecure This is also the time when children are making choices for themselves and gaining independence Physical changes may be noticeable around this age more so for girls than for boys Children in middle childhood grow steadily until the beginning of puberty Children start to gain on an average seven pounds per year during this age 11Oc6 A childs appetite tends to increase during this period also 11Oc6 Body composition remains even during middle childhood During preadolescence and early adolescence body fat increases in preparation for the growth that occurs during adolescence 11Oc6 Girls tend to have more body fat than boys and the increase tends to occur earlier in girls than in boys This is basically a part of normal growth and development Boys tend to have leaner body mass than girls in the middle childhood stage 11Oc6 These differences in body composition may become more important during this age Children start to care about appearance during this age Girls may be too worried about how they look and start to eat less 11Oc6 This can lead to eating disorders at a young age To avoid these problems parents should just assure their daughters that this is just a normal part of development 11Oc6 During this stage boys may be concerned about their muscle mass and strength
