If a person traveled to all fifty states of the United States they would certainly hear many different accents From street dwelling New Yorkers to porch sitting southerners to friendly mid-westerners people sound vastly different in the many diverse areas of the United States Yet as this person traveled through the country they would most likely be unaware that not only are they hearing different accents but also many different dialects of the English language More often then not people will use the word accent incorrectly as a synonym of dialect How people sound and how they pronounce words as they talk is a demonstration of their accent where as a dialect is the differences in grammar syntax and even vocabulary Accents can vary significantly from person to person but a dialect describes specifically a group of people from a region or a certain culture and applies to them as a whole To refer to one persons individual dialect the term idiolect would be usedThe United States has both culturally defined and regionally defined dialects In the United States there are seven culturally defined dialects which range from Chicano English to Pennsylvania Dutch English The number of regionally defined dialects is a debated topic but is nonetheless much greater than the number of culturally defined dialects in this country Depending on how many times the regions are subdivided the more subdivided they are the more diminutive the differences are there is a range of about 8-36 regionally defined English dialects in the United States The majority of researchers suggest there are 24 official dialects of English in the Unites States Through the years this number has certainly fluctuated The most generic and simple way to subdivide the United States is done by dividing it into three large regions the General Northern the Midland and the General southern An example of a subdivision of a region is the Western English dialect This dialect has
