Ali asked me in Somali what did he say I was supposed to translate English into Somali for him but I couldnt I knew how to translate Somali to English but I could not do it in the other way I felt so embarrassed because both of my parents were Somali and that is their first language I had to call my dad so he could translate for him Later that day my dad told me how are you going to help me if you cannot speak Somali My dad job is medical transportation which basically is taking patients to the doctor for their appointments and bringing them back to their homes Ali like many of the patients my dad picks up were Somali and most of them cant speak English Some doctors dont have Somali translators so my dad does it for them Later when we were taking Ali back to his home he said learn Somali or else he said you will forget who you are Being the first in my family to be born in the United States I had struggles with learning the Somali cultureLearning Somali was extremely difficult for me First of all I understand if someone talks to me in Somali but I have trouble with talking the language My plan was to only speak Somali to my parents every time they were home I would think of the words in my head and then tried to say them but it somehow came out wrong and no one knew what I said The Somali language requires a very light tongue You must make sounds that are not pronounced in the English language I hear many Somali people describe English as have heavy tongue by which they mean the words are not distinguished I had trouble with the speed at which everyone talks in Somali I was listening to a Somali news radio and had a trouble time keeping
