Every year Puerto Rico is able to vote on whether or not they would like to apply for statehood The majority of votes have never fallen to the latter until this year However there are many people who believe that Puerto Rico will not become a state The Huffington Post produced an article titled 5 Reasons Why Puerto Rico Wont Become a State In this article the author states that the island will not become a state because 1 although a majority voted for statehood it was not a large enough majority to have full support of the electorate of Puerto Rico 2 While a small majority voted for statehood a larger number of people voted to remove Louis Fortuno from office the man who was the largest supporter for statehood 3 President Obama is not 100 for it He wants to let the people of Puerto Rico decide what they want in hope that their decision will influence the final decision of Congress on the issue 4 the people of the island are already citizens of the US and a majority of the population already lives in the states Many people feel it would be redundant to add another state when the Puerto Ricans can already choose from 50 states to live in 5 Congress wont admit the island because the vote for statehood was not large enough These points are the basis of a vast majority of people against the island becoming a state The other main reason is the plebiscite the Puerto Rican vote with David Royston Patterson of the New York Times argues that the country of Puerto Rico needs a new plebiscite that is clearer in the choices the people have on what to do with the country He says that before they can officially decide what is to be done with the country the people need a better understanding of what their options areAside from the reasons why Puerto
