The novel I chose is The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros In this paper Im going to first talk about the background of the book and the author and then analyze the role of the neighborhood of Mango Street in the story Im also going to discuss cultural assumptions and understandings about urban space in the story the sense of place expressed by the main characters and the social relations that are essential for understanding the narrative I will talk about how the novel is related to the theories we learned in class such as disadvantages theory and cultural theory Published in 1984 The House on Mango Street is a novel written by Sandra Cisneros Author Sandra Cineros graduataed from Loyola University in 1976 and attended the Iowa Writers Workshop in 1978 She writes about a young Latina girl Esperanza Codero growing up in America and her experience of the difficulties of growing up in a Latino American family Her mother is Mexican-American and her father is Mexican and she spent her childhood going back and forth between Puerto Ricans and Chicago The place where Esperanza grows up has a significant impact on her life The narrator paints a geographical and cultural picture from the past and the present of Mango Street and also the surrounding neighborhood Cathy who is Esperanzas first friend in her new neighborhood indicates what the neighborhood may have been like in the past The neighborhood has two cultures Latin American and American with two languages Spanish and English Mango Street is near a dangerous busy street and Esperanzas house is near a Laundromat The Laundromat reminds Esperanza where she used to live They had to move because it was robbed and this indicates how dangerous and unstable the neighborhood is on the street Cathy provides an insight of how outsiders view Esperanzas neighborhood
