It is the moral and religions condition of the people which beyond everything else demands the attention of the philosophical inquirer 8 While on her tour of America Fanny Trollope found many things unsettling Things such as the weather the culture and the Americans in general made her sick to her stomach It is religion however that Trollope finds particularly distasteful and she criticizes then intensely Trollope views American religious practices as corrupt and inconsistent and particularly does not agree with them because she sees religion in America as shallow and fake One notion that Trollope points out is that in her eyes Americans use religion as social gatherings rather than actual practice of religion It is in the churches and chapels of the town that the ladies are to be seen in full costume and I am tempted to believe that a stranger from the continent of Europe would be inclined on first reconnoitering the city to suppose that the places of worship were the theatres and cafs of the place 59 Trollope sees American women using church and worship as a chance to flaunt their finest of clothing more so than using them for religious purposes She uses herself as an example as a stranger from the continent of Europe to imply that this is very different than how the British display themselves and their practices at church which in her opinion is the proper way Trollope also makes note of American prayer meetings Every evening that is not spent in churches and meeting-houses is devoted to what would be called parties by others but which they designate as prayer meetings Here they eat drink pray sing hear confessions and make converts 61 She compares these prayer meetings to parties showing that in her view they are not religious gatherings at all but more of social occurrences Another factor about religious practices in America that bothers Trollope in the division of it the
