Even with the overwhelming amount of diversity that resides in the United States of America every citizen that abides there has one universal drive to reach a similar goal a goal that is commonly referred to as the American dream When one is asked to define the American dream the two concepts that are most popularly associated with it is having an attractive home with a white picket fence and obtaining a successful occupation that could lead to the ability of financing a family In most perceptions the accomplishment of the American dream does not have to consist of extreme wealth but merely existing as average in society Not only are these two perceptions solely related to the American dream but also the end result of a lifetime full of happiness Many come from all over to the United States to find their personal version of the American dream and see what living the dream feels like something that might be far from obtainable in their home countries However the concept of the American dream has been subject to criticism that concludes that it is not equally attainable for everyone People of other racial groups meet barriers that disallow them from possessing a house and a job that they are well qualified for Both in the workforce and housing market there is still a prominent gap between white and people of other racial groups When it comes to people of color the American dream continues to persist as a dream not becoming a reality Although with the election of Barack Obama it could give more realistic hopes and expectations to minorities that reside in the United States Institutions such as the workplace and the housing market disallow other racial groups from fulfilling the American dream However Barack Obama becoming president provides this group the realistic hope of its possible achievement Throughout America people of color are presented with discrimination in the workforce that prevents
