Prior to be used by the courts DNA analysis was used primarily for genetic research as tool used to help scientists find the causes of many diseases and human abnormalities In the last 30 years however the use of DNA analysis for forensic purposes has become a vital resource aiding law enforcement and court officials in the apprehension and conviction of thousands of criminals for numerous crimes against person and property in the United States Contrarily the use of DNA analysis has also led to the overturn andexoneration of nearly 300 inmates including 17 death row inmates since the procedure was implemented DNA analysis also called DNA typing or fingerprinting has become one of the main uses for DNA analysis in the United States The technological advancements used in DNA typing are made possible using various complex methods of extraction and duplication of DNA molecules Fisher 2000 Before the technique was introduced law enforcement and court officials had to rely primarily on such evidence as fingerprints blood type eyewitness testimony and circumstantial evidence to aid in the acquittal or conviction of defendants Row 1994 For many years in the United States inmates convicted of committing serious crimes rape murder and armed robbery only known recourse to contest guilt based on evidence was to plead with the court to allow DNA evidence to help prove their innocence In most cases inmates were denied access to DNA fingerprinting measures post-conviction as crime laboratories and criminal courts were overburdened with inmates making false claims of innocence merely as a last resort to obtain freedom NIDJ 2000 Signed in 2004 the Justice for All Act is useful legislation in this struggle The Justice for All Act includes the Innocence Protection Act legislation that among other things grants any federal inmate the right to petition a federal court for DNA testing to support a claim of innocence The passage of this law has been critical to those inmates asserting a
