There have been debates on whether the use of drugs during pregnancy and if it will harm the child and the mother Using drugs during pregnancy not only harm the infant it could result in miscarriage low birth weight premature labor placental abruption fetal death and even maternal death Illicit drug use during pregnancy 2006 Any type of drug use will hurt an infant in a way because of the substance that is carried in these drugs With this being said any type of illicit drug would do much more damage to an unborn child The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration states that nearly 4 percent of pregnant women in the United States use illicit drugs such as marijuana cocaine Ecstasy and other amphetamines and heroin these and other illicit drugs may pose various risks for pregnant women and their babies Some of these drugs can cause a baby to be born too small or too soon or to have withdrawal symptoms birth defects or learning and behavioral problems Illicit drug use during pregnancy 2006 Mothers who consume these illicit drugs daily while being pregnant failed to realize that it will cause long term and development damages to their child They think the use of drugs a certain times a day would affect the unborn child but in fact put the child at huge risks it often is difficult to determine which health problems are caused by a specific illicit drug Pregnant mothers are known to have a certain cravings for certain things for instance food or candy some drug using pregnant mothers instead have a craving for drugs and a large dose of it Pregnant women who use illicit drugs may engage in unhealthy situations that would out their pregnancy at huge risks it will cause poor nutrition problem or sexually transmitted infections Many of these factors are difficult to determine exactly what the effects of illicit drugs have on while youre pregnant
