Edward Estlin Cummings now known as ee cummings knew from the beginning he wanted to be a poet Poetry came easily to him Then many things started to get in the way of his dream He was drafted for war his family life was complicated and he developed a love for paintingHe was mixed up about writing and painting and he could not decide which he wanted to continue with in life He attended Harvard University which helped get his priorities straight School helped Cummings find a way to use his visual painting skills and writing skills together Cummings also experimented with poems as visual objects on the page Poetry After many years full of distractions and obstacles he was finally able to follow through with his childhood dream of becoming a poetWhen Cummings began his career with poetry people knew right away his poems were different Not only were the words different but the design and visual of them as well Since Cummings use to love painting and art it helped him form his poems in interesting ways so they appeared different from other poets He used not only his mind but his eyes too so his poems caught other peoples attention Cummings work during this period reflects his notion that poems were visual objects American Like how he changed his name to all lower case Cummings also changed the grammar in his poems He used incorrect punctuation and capitalization he separated sentences in random spots and he changed the meaning of words He then started to make up his own words and language He used a technique of avoiding technique and one article stated he was creating his own style Cummings experimented with poetic forms and languages to create a distinct personal style Poetry Cummings was very independent and original when it came to writing Besides the syntax aspect of his poems the visual aspect also appeared different Unlike a lot of
