There is a total of seven ecoregions in the state of Minnesota The Northern Glaciated Plains the Western Corn Belt Plains the Red River Valley also known as Lake Agassiz Plain the Northern Minnesota Wetlands the Northern Lakes and Forests the North Central Hardwood Forests and the Driftless Area Each region has different geologic hydrologic climatic and biological characteristic that make this state uniqueFirst are the three ecoregions located on the lower half of Minnesota the Northern Glaciated Plains the Western Corn Belt Plains and the Driftless Area The Northern Glaciated Plains is a flat to rolling ecoregion made from glacial till and is located on the south west side of Minnesota This ecoregion is a grassland region with very fertile soil and rich in organic matter The average precipitation is 25 inches a year and the average snowfall is 35 inches a year The Western Corn Belt Plains is located on the south side of Minnesota It is now cropland but it used to be covered with tallgrass prairie and moist fertile soil This ecoregion is one of the most productive areas in the world it produces corn and soybeans The average precipitation is about 30 inches a year and the average snowfall is about 40 inches a year The Driftless Area is on the south eastern tip of Minnesota This ecoregion is full of hills and valleys it also has an eroded plateau called the Paleozoic Plateau The soil is silty with little vegetation The average precipitation is about 30 inches a year and the average snowfall is about 40 inches a year Second are the three ecoregions located on the upper half of Minnesota the Northern Minnesota Wetlands the Red River Valley and the Northern Lakes and Forests The Northern Minnesota Wetlands is a level ecoregion covered with swamps and boreal forests located on the north side of Minnesota The soil is full of organic matter The average precipitation is 25
