Spoon River Anthology is an american classic written by Edgar Lee Masters The book is a collection of autobiographical poems featuring the silent inhabitants of the small towns graveyard The stories of their lives joys and sorrows success and failures love and heartbreak betrayal and secrets lies and death Written in 1915 this book was considered scandalous and if you were caught reading it youd be viewed as an outcast In this book Pauline Barrett Elizabeth Childers and Julia Miller all have immensely depressing stories involving children and death Pauline Barrett was a simple middle-class woman who enjoyed her life in Spoon River and loved her husband dearly Unfortunately having a baby was the one thing Pauline desired more than life itself When she had to have a hysterectomy all of her dreams were crushed and she felt worthless Infact she referred to herself as Almost the shell of a woman after the surgeons knife Feeling herself a disappointment as a woman and as a wife she committed suicide Hiding in her own shell the turtle represents Pauline frightened and aloneElizabeth Childers was a depressed young lady unable to make ends meet with a poor outlook on life As a child she had been tormented with hurtful words and later became pregnant with a man who did not care for her Elizabeth was left alone to take care of herself and the baby growing inside her belly In the end the baby is born stillborn and Elizabeth dies while trying to deliver The ending to her epigram suggests that Elizabeth was happy about the fact that her baby would never grow up to experience The long long way that begins with school days When little fingers blur under the tears that fall on the crooked letters COMPAREJulia Miller was an older woman who had sexual encounters with a much younger man and it caused her to become pregnant with his child After she learns that
