The United States does not have an official language Some may think it is English but it is not stated in the Constitution There has been an English-only debate going on for more than centuries The English-only movement has been affecting the Education aspect due to bilingual programs in schools The English controversy has been going on a long time yet there has not been a decision whether English should be the official language of the United States If the law is passed some argue that it can affect the Education and other say it can get rid of issues aroused by the English-only debateThere are pros and cons of the bilingual programs that make an impact in the United States Samuel Ichiye Hayakawa states that government has been edging toward policies that place other languages on par with English 390 Some of the schools have bilingual programs to help their students improve their English language with their native language In 1967 President Lyndon Baines Johnson passed the Bilingual Education Act of 1968 one of the purpose was to encourage the recognition of the special educational needs of limited-English-speaking children San Miguel 506 Although this Act had passed one of the conflicts began because there were no specific rules of limitation to non-English speakers San Miguel 506 Even if bilingual education can be a positive start according to Jayne Keedle the cost of providing multilingual services including bilingual education add up to hundreds of millions of dollars each year 26 This was in 2005 know the amount might have increased in recent years It shows how it can affect the economy of the United States If the Bilingual programs did not exist it would be less money the government would spend on education In this case it would be beneficial for the United States to establish English as the official language Yet Hayakawa
