Our neurons are designed by nature to reflect their environment not toautomatically rise above it Jensen 2007 In the case of childrenraised in poverty this can be a detrimental fact as poverty iscorrelated with affecting parts of the brain dealing with workingmemory executive functioning and cognitive and behavioral developmentChildren raised in poverty are exposed to chronic stressundernutrition and hindered social and emotional relationships Recently researchers at Penn State University New York University andChapel Hill concluded that the stress brought on by poverty can lowerthe ability of children to perform well in school It was concluded thatelevated levels of stress hinders the thinking process Over a course ofseven to twenty-four months the researchers analyzed the cortisonelevels a stress hormone in 1300 students Taking into considerationthe variables of the environment of the students household parentsinvolvement in childs education and the childs sensitivity Aftermeasuring the amount of cortisone the stress levels of the studentsbeing studied could be determined It was concluded that higher levelsof stress were consistently found in poverty stricken children comparedto the average child It was also determined that when the issue ofpoverty was resolved the stress levels in children were reduced and theside effects of stress were not as apparent Since stress is correlatedto negatively affecting the brains executive functions such asindependent thinking this could be detrimental to a childs learningOther studies have proven that stress from poverty lowers IQ and readingscores as well as significant memory loss Furthermore it was revealedthat children as young as three years old could experience increasedstress levels resulting in adverse effects This chronic stress is known to produce an adjustment to the stresspoints of ones body The chronic stress carries over day to day Sinceour brain creates paths through repetition altered stress points carrya long term effect This being the case the stress of poverty has alasting effect Children suffering from elevated stress levels are morelikely to suffer from
