There has been much controversy among teachers students and researchers as to whether a communicative or grammatical approach in the classroom helps learners achieve a second language According to Stephen Krashens Monitor ModelInput Hypothesis language acquisition and language learning are two different attempts at becoming proficient in a second language Language acquisition deals with a more communicative approach towards second language acquisition while language learning deals with the grammatical aspect of the language Students teachers and researchers have argued about which approach is more beneficial towards achieving proficiency in the target language and more often than not it has been stated that a communicative approach is more beneficial Whether its interactive activities in a classroom setting or immersing the students in the target language a communicative approach allows the students to become more competent in the second language In Kent Yagers article Learning Spanish in Mexico The Effect of Informal Contact and Student Attitudes on Language Gain he hypothesized that there was a positive correlation to second language acquisition due to informal contact and students attitudes He then conducted a study which led to his statistical findings and made the positive correlation that a communicative approach such as interactive activities with native Spanish speakers helps learners achieve the second language with greater gains Although language acquisition and learning are both essential to developing second language competence acquisition is far more important because it helps expose learners to language that is meaningful to them Kent Yagers article deals with empirical studies that relate to whether or not students achieve greater competence of a second language with total immersion Yager uses many statistical findings and procedures to provide a basis for his present study He uses the background studies on students learning a second language in study abroad programs from students who went to France Venezuela and Russia and all were conclusive to the fact that students learned better when they interacted with others in the target
