Embryonic stem cell research is currently one of the most controversial issues in America The use of human embryonic stem cells for experimentation can benefit the welfare of the American people as well as expand our knowledge in medical science Unfortunately this research has been delayed by many reasons such as limited funding and restrictive patents which all derive from the major issue at hand human rightsWhat is an embryonic stem cell According to the National Institutes of Health most embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitroin an in vitro fertilization clinicand then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors The embryos are not derived from eggs fertilized in a womans body An embryonic stem cell has the ability to differentiate into any particular organ or tissue where a mature stem cell has already been assigned a specific organ or tissue role That is the reason the embryonic stem cell holds the promising ability with proper manipulation in the lab to be any kind of cell needed to study or repair The moral and political controversy arises from the fact that extracting the stem cells destroys the embryo SandelMichael J Sandel at Harvard University in Cambridge Massachusetts plainly explains the proponents viewpoint He explains that these embryos are blastocysts a cluster of 180-200 cells growing in a petri dish It is undeniable that a human embryo is living rather than dead and human rather than bovine but this does not establish that the blastocyst is a human being or a person Any living human cell is human life in the sense of living and not dead but a skin cell for example would not be considered a person To say that a blastocyst is a person would require further argument Consider this analogy provided by SandelAlthough every oak tree was once an acorn it does not follow that acorns are oak trees
