Executive SUMMARY-In the current study the energy consumption of houses in Canada is estimated using the HOT2000 energy simulation program After estimating the energy consumption for different end-uses options to reduce energy consumption were identified With the help of simulation HOT2000 model energy saved under various options was calculated at the household level To estimate the overall energy Consumptionengineering based model which is representative of Single detached houses in Alberta is developed using data available from the NRC website 2007 Survey of Household Energy Use SHEU-2007 Data Tables the Modified STAR-HOUSING database default values from program and minor contributions from other sources Overall household energy Consumption is estimated using the HOT2000 energy simulation program SHEU-2007 covers over 129 million households across Canada The survey is representative of households in all 10 Canadian provinces However the information available from SHEU is not sufficient to develop HOT2000 input files to be used in energy simulation models Therefore a house model was developed using information available from the Modified STAR-HOUSING database HOT2000 default values and other sources A HOT2000 input file was developed to obtain estimates of annual unit energy consumption UEC of houses in Alberta in the SHEU databaseIntroduction-Residential energy use which accounts for 17 percent of secondary energy use in Canada is a large component of the national energy consumption1 Energy Consumption of houses in Alberta can be affected by many factors including characteristics of building envelop climate region space heating and space cooling equipment efficiencies water heating equipment efficiencies etc To estimate the overall energy consumption of the houses in Alberta all of these factors should be taken into considerationTo estimate the overall energy consumption engineering based model which is representative of Single detached houses in Alberta is developed using data available from the NRC website 2007 Survey of Household Energy Use SHEU-2007 Data Tables the Modified STAR-HOUSING database HOT2000 default values and from other sources Overall household energy Consumption is estimated
