English as known worldwide is an international language and has been dominating the world since the colonial period There is an undeniable fact that English is spoken by millions of people throughout the world Thus many people believe that English is an instrument of cultural imperialism This is of course true based on some considerable reasons The first reason that makes English one of the instruments of cultural imperialism is that language is a part of a culture When we learn a new language English for example we are also learning its culture The ways people learn a language is through speaking reading listening writing and the most obvious one is learning by doing So when we learn English we might sometimes practice the way lets say American or British people do because were learning their language For example all English learners know very well about what we call handshaking which is one of the American cultures and its irrefutable that those learners will sometimes shake hand to greet people like the way they have seen when they learn the language Secondly economics dominance could also be a reason that makes English an instrument of cultural imperialism In the past many countries tried to compete their military power to dominate the world and this we can see through The Cold War Now the Cold War already ended and the world started to change from military competition to economics competition Coming to this we can see that The US is the economics superpower with the highest GDP record So how can economy be relevant to cultural imperialism The fact is that those who have more economic power will influence other For instance when the US for example comes to make an investment in a poor country like Cambodia the American culture will be spread through the language they use with local people and the language they use is English so again English will be something that
