Equality of rights is a topic that has been discussed and debated for several centuries When the constitution was being created it arose several different questions Many debated on whether or not citizens of the state were being deprived from their equality of rights The amount of power a government should have who should control this power and whether or not a democracy was in fact in the best interest of the citizens are some of the questions that the federalist and anti-federalist discussed during their great debate The federalist believed that a democracy was created so that the government could uphold the rights and liberties that each citizen ought to have On the other hand the anti-federalist believed that the constitution was created to take away the rights and liberties of the citizens and give all the power and dictation to elites who would not govern the citizens properly or fairly Anti-federalist believed that in an elite democracy the elites would get greedy and selfish and only worry about themselves their idea of representation was that the representative should not filter or choose what request from the people he should listen to but instead he should listen to all of the request instructed by the people During the debate the Federalist mentioned that if indeed the representative listened to every request that was given to him by the people he would then have to listen to those request that might lead to corruption or not be in the best interest of the public Debate in the House of Representatives p37 The federalist understood that the people should have a say in the decision making of the process but they believed that the person that was the appointed representative should be given the ability to decide on what was in the best interest of the public Public opinion was considered important to federalist and also generally respected but they believed that it was not
