Abstract This essay argues that due to some specific differences between English and Arabic achieving equivalent effect a concept proposed by Nida 1964 in translating comics into Arabic cannot be achieved The definitions of comics dynamic and formal equivalence are presented in this essay as well as the two methods that can be applied in translating comics which are domestication and foreginization This essay examine with providing examples these specific features which includes cultural taboos religious items humorous jokes and wordplays and how it is hard to achieve equivalent effect in the translation Keywords translating comics equivalence effect Nida cultureIntroduction Translation which is a process that builds bridges between two different cultures and countries has always been an important tool for communicating sharing knowledge and transmitting information Translators all around the world face different challenges of converting cultural and linguistic items into other languages Each text and field has specific characteristics format style terms and language that translators should pay attention to in the process of translation Translating comics is one of the fields that poses a challenge for the translator since it is completely different than other types of texts Comics which can be found as a book a magazine a newspaper strip or photo can be considered a source of entertainment that attracts children teenagers and adults alike According to Varnum and Gibbons 2001 comics are one of the most popular and pervasive media forms of our increasingly visual age They are considered a serious cultural production in Europe America and Japan In the Arab world comics have become extremely common and translated English comics as well as Japanese manga have attracted many people of different age groupsTranslating comics into Arabic a language that is known for its linguistic complexity as well as cultural sensitiveness is challenging This paper will argue that due to some specific differences between the Arabic and English languages and cultures equivalent effect in translating comics
