Erik Erikson is a modern psychologist who developed the psychosocial theory Erikson first thought that his theory was just simply an elaboration of Freuds psychosexual theory however Erikson soon realized that his theory was very different from Freuds theory Eriksons theory begins from birth and then continues all the way until death Erikson didnt believe that Freud focused enough on development in adulthood and focused solely on the role that sexual development has The theory of psychosocial development has eight stages of personality development In every stage there is a crisis like trust vs mistrust autonomy vs shame initiative vs guilt industry vs inferiority and identity vs role confusion and with each crisis there is a healthy or unhealthy trait Unlike Freud Erikson believed that there could be a healthy resolution to the unhealthy trait if you seek help later in life In psychology I took the Eriksonian Incomplete Sentence Blank test or ISBT to tell where I was in my development and how healthy or unhealthy my outcomes are The test we took consisted of seventy eight incomplete sentences that we needed to complete with our ideas or opinions on the matter at hand The first crisis is trust vs mistrust This stage occurs from when you are born until you are about one and a half years old A healthy outcome will result from the parents treating the child with love and meeting the childs need like food and diaper changes in a timely fashion An unhealthy outcome would occur from a parent not treating a child lovingly or changing the childs diaper when the diaper needs to be changed A healthy outcome will lead to the child being able to not only trust themselves but also trust the world that is around them and believe that it is a safe place to be An unhealthy outcome would be one where the child cant trust themselves and they cant trust the world around
