The famous Greek writer Euripides was known for his harsh portrait andcondemnations of the Greeks gods In his plays Euripides portrayedmost of the gods moral standards to be lower than of virtuous men Heexposed their abuse of power on human kind to fulfill their greeddesires and entertainment which provoked his audiences thoughts ontheir religion society and moral views Perhaps one of the Greeksgods Euripides seemed to condemn the most in his work was the god oforder Apollo Euripides questioned the morality and relevance of the godApollo by giving him human attributes and exposing his lack of godlycharacteristics The god Apollo represented order truth andrighteousness to the Greeks Euripides provoked the relevance of thatthought about Apollo in the stories of Ion and Electra where Apollo wasa factor on the outcomes and tragedies of both plays by portraying theGreeks god of order as the god that is always involved in chaos and notas righteous as he is perceived to be by the Greeks Through the actionsand wrong deeds of the god Apollo Euripides demonstrated on how theGreeks gods manipulate and uses humankind as playthings whichraises question on how moral and relevant the Greeks society andreligion was after all In the play Electra Apollo gives an oracle to Electras brother Oresteswho has been in exile from his homeland to go back and kill themurderers of his father Agamemnon Orestes being a mortal and a Greekcannot refuse the orders given by the god Apollo even though it meansthat he must kill his own birth mother In this Greek tragedyEuripides calls in question Orestess deed and the oracle given out bythe god Apollo How could a god give such a horrific and taboo oracleand how could a son be influenced to kill his own birth motherEuripides condemns Apollo and questions his nature as a god how couldhe just make such decision for a boy to kill his own mother withoutfinding anything unmoral of it Before the murder
