The Iranian Revolution in 1979 was a combination of nationalism political populism and religious radicalism These events which played an important part in the formation of the revolution go back to the late 19th century and through the early and mid-20th century leading up to 1979 These events have a mixture of social economic and cultural factors influencing themUnderstanding what the Iranian government was like in the late 19th century gives a good background for where future issues arise In the late 19th century the Shah of Iran ruled Iran with no strong centralized government this ends up being the biggest problem down the road Governing of outlying provinces towns and villages was done primarily at a local level The citizens of Iran lived mostly in small communities with their own structures hierarchies languages and dialects Abrahamian 2008 The majority of the Iranian people practiced the Shii religion There was also a very small landed feudal class referred to as the one thousand families which actually numbered far less than one thousand Due to this separation and lack of unity amongst the people the Qajars in this time period governed Iran more through the manipulation of social divisions than through bureaucratic institutions Abrahamian 2008 This is largely because manipulation and the hope that the social structure would work out problems in communities was the only option as the Qajars did not have the military or police force to enforce laws for them The tax system in place for the Qajars was very flawed not allowing a consistent annual budget for the government With no dependable source of revenue to finance the government it was bound to lack the organization and structure it required to be strong and stable Along with these problems with the power of the Iranian government the next biggest problem was the increasing Western influence within the country The poor tax system in Iran and lack of funds led to the Iranian
