The novel The Road demonstrates how imagery portrays evil and proves the theme of destruction The idea of evil is present throughout the novel the men act recklessly trying to destroy such an immortal concept The novel states The men poured gasoline on them and burned them alive having no remedy for evil but only for the image of It as they conceived it to be McCarthy 188 The men pour the gasoline trying to defeat evil when in reality they destroy the people whom they believe are evil but not evil itself The idea of evil is immortal in the sense that if you set out to destroy something that is evil you are not destroying all evil just something that was taken over by evil The image that is destroyed in this passage is the men but the definite thing evil is not affected Cormac McCarthy uses imagery to support the major struggle to destroy something and how it ends up as the destruction of part of evil but not the entire thing McCarthy uses symbolism to depict the memory of the mans wife and convey the theme of destruction The man tries to relieve himself of his past and move on towards his future As the man is cleaning out his wallet he comes across an old picture of his wife and sat holding the photograph Then he laid it down in the road also and then he stood and they went on McCarthy 51 The man leaves behind the picture of his wife as an act to forget about her when in reality the man will always remember his wife the picture was just one of the many things that reminded the man of her In attempt to destroy the memory of his wife the man leaves behind the picture of her This attempt was unsuccessful in the sense that the man
