This essay aims to identify what people perceive as dignity and to look at how importance of dignity when providing health care It will focus on dignity from the patients point of view and also from the health care professionals point of view Taking those views and working on a scenario to identify actions that can best promote and maintain the patients dignity And also discussing how the Professional Code of Conduct NMC 2008 will guide the nurses actions To finish of the student nurse has to reflect on how their understanding of dignity in health care may affect their future Despite being one of the most widely used concepts dignity is a complex concept to define It is however easier to identify when it is not central to care or communications rather than to define what it actually means However the Royal College Nursing College RCN 2006 defines dignity as being concerned with how people feel think and behave in relation to the worth or value of themselves To treat someone with respect is to treat them as being worthy in a way that is respectful of them as valued individuals The Human Rights Act 1998 affords patient the right to appropriate medical services that respect their personal value believes and to be treated with dignity at all times This includes the patients right to be free from all forms of abuse To tackle the issue of dignity in care the government has introduced health policies which focus on dignity they now is an increased emphasis on promoting patients rights with health policies such as Essence of Care DH2001a which provide Best Practice Benchmarks for providing privacy and dignity the NSF for older people DH2001b Dignity Campaign DH 2006 which set out a ten- point Dignity Challenge plan which is to be applied across the Health care institute of clinical excellence The NSF for Older people DH
