The price of freedom is the subject of many discussions in modern literature especially in novels depicting those who are socially oppressed Two particular novels The Help and Native Son both show the struggle for the price of equality through three main protagonists Minny a colored maid Skeeter a struggling writer and Bigger a colored man living in povertyStockett and Wright showcase that an individuals disregard for societal values and the embrace of ones personal beliefs often leads to ones personal freedom but often at the cost of being looked down upon by society especially in particular a society where racial and social oppression is prominent This is illustrated through Biggers criminal actions Skeeters honesty with Stuart and choice to publish her controversial novel as well as the use of symbolism through Minnys pie and the self-confidence that she gains soon after Throughout The Help Skeeter generally develops over the course of the novel a sort of self-awakening and learns to value the set of standards and morals that she herself believes in rather than the social principles and boundaries that Hilly and the rest of white society that she has been constantly told to uphold After Stuart her current suitor asks for her hand in marriage Skeeter then replies with a confession about the book she was currently writing much to Stuarts dismay Stuart then takes back his proposal asking Skeeter why she would even consider to care about this449 Despite this Skeeter still believes that what she has done is right and understands his reason for leaving Skeeters complete disregard about the negative publicity the book might receive and the honesty she displays toward Stuart about the novel shows her indifference towards the social boundaries by which the society she was born into has pressured her to prioritize In a way Stuart represents a majority of the white society during the 60s each of who possess a stagnant point of view on
