Many questions arise when people believe that we have an all-powerful and all good god yet there is evil and suffering in the world John Leslie Mackie was born in 1917 in Sydney Australia Mackie was a very successful philosopher of his time and he became the first holder of the chair of Philosophy at the University of York in 1963 Mackie died in 1981 in Oxford leaving many books behind In 1955 Mackie left an article about evil and omnipotence which he discusses the issue of evil Where does it come from If god is all good why does evil exist Mackie attempts to answer these questions as he examines what we believe god is all powerful and all good In this paper I will argue for the claim that suffering and evil are not incompatible with the existence of a god that is all powerful God being all good and explaining evil to the sense that it is merely an illusionThe first proposition of God is that he is all good We believe god to be good and only good giving us strength during bad times God guides us towards the right path and protects us from evil Mackie asserts the belief that God cannot exist without evil or Evil is necessary as a counterpart to good page 93 How I interpret this was if there is only good how would we know its good There has to be an opposite to balance everything we do The principle that a term must have an opposite would belong only to our language or to our thought the rule that good cannot exist without evil would not state a logical necessity of a sort that god would just have to put up with It provides a solution for the problem of evil if one is prepared to say that evil exists but only enough to serve as a counterpart of goodpage 95 Therefore for
