With my summer plans ruined because of my sisters wedding I had to do something local A week into the summer I got a call from a day camp Hi this is Chani head counselor at camp Merockdim I heard you are looking for a job One of our counselors just quit on us and we were wondering if you could take over I didnt even wait to hear all of the details I agreed immediately I was intolerably bored that previous week and dreaded another week like it Anything would be better then boredom I was to start the following dayI came in early in the morning I asked a camper to direct me to the second and third grade bunk She did so I came in and my junior counselor was there waiting There were only three kids in the bunk room so I asked JCAre you Michal she nodded mutelyIm TzipporaI said She nodded again uncommunicatively I looked at the girls already in the bunkroom What are those girls names Michal told me the girls names but nothing more As soon as she was done she began playing with her phone again So I asked What school do you go to she hesitated and then responded Breuers she answered in monosyllables Then she went back to her phone Clearly I wasnt worth talking toOh do you know Rena SternNo she said not even looking up from his phone What a snob I thought annoyed that I had to be stuck with her for half a summer I did not attempt any more friendly overturesAll summer long all of her actions I attributed to the fact that she was a standoffish and I didnt expect more from her My questions and conversations were saved for the friendlier counselors We never spoke to each other socially Whenever we spoke we did say was very businesslike and detached yet cordial More toward the end of
