Third century Rome was in a chaotic state that eventually led to the collapse of the Roman Empire Economic problems played a major factor in contributing to this collapse During Neros rule there were signs of a higher demand for revenue to keep up with rising defense costs and a growing Roman bureaucracy This led to massive debt and caused major issues throughout the empire that were never able to be resolved In the end Rome collapsed under the weight of its large debtThere are many similarities between this period of Roman history and the current situation in the United States The most frightening are the economic problems These should be a call to action for our elected officials to come up with solutions It is abundantly clear that the US deficit is a major threat to continued stability in the United States Many suggest that the deficit is the biggest threat to national security Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullenin 2011 stated thatdebt is the single biggest threat to our national security There is a growing fear that this debt could destroy the United States economic power and lead to the downfall of the country If current politicians dont step up and address the debt problem the country could suffer the same consequences as Rome Moreover a failing US economy could cause massive global problems This paper analyzes the causes of the debt and current federal spending levels It also discusses the difficulties in passing debt legislation due to the different positions on the deficit by Republicans and Democrats The goal of this paper is to provide a better understanding of why the deficit problem exists and what needs to be done to fix itThere are numerous reasons for the large US deficit It is not a recent problem There is a long history of the US accumulating debt Since the early 1980s a
