1Intolerance was one theme in the crucible Since the story was set in a puritan society where the church and government were one This made sin and the status of an individuals soul matters of public concern If the life one lead was immoral they could be punished by the state Anything that wasnt for god was ultimately against him and thereby punishable by trial Intolerance is a theme because witch trials branded people as social deviants and devil worshippers In such an uptight society behavior of this sort was intolerable so they eradicated these individuals from the community 2Another theme was Hysteria Hysteria would tear people apart because it caused them to believe every ridiculous thing they were told In the book hysteria allowed people to punish people for what in their minds was wrong It also gave people reason to act on previously held grudges that they couldnt before Abigail used hysteria to try and condemn Elizabeth Reverend Parris uses it to strengthen his role in the community by using scapegoats who questioned him Hysteria suspends the rules of daily life and allows the acting out of every dark desire and hateful urge under the cover of righteousness 3Reputation is a theme because if your reputation was poor you were open game for any kind of accusations In a society where government and religious standing are the same reputation is an important aspect Someone with a bad reputation could easily be accused of witchcraft because everyone would expect an immoral person to be deviant in that way If a person is being accused others may attest just so not to be confused as a partner of the one in question
