Within society there are various factors that contribute to the development of prejudice and discrimination from birth Contrarily techniques for reducing the development of the attitudes and behaviors that spawn from such unfairness are more attainable that humanity realizes By approaching discriminative behavior and prejudiced influences during early childhood people can inhibit the crippling social effects of stereotypes racism sexism and other false ideologiesWhen discussing prejudice and discrimination the factors that cause these attitudes and behaviors are a key to understanding how to deal with such causes According to the text prejudice refers to negative attitudes towards others while discrimination refers to negative behaviors towards others Biases involved in prejudice and discrimination are culturally conditioned meaning that preconceptions are learned and developed as people grow and observe the environment This is exemplified in debated concepts such as the economic competition theory and the authoritarian personality theory During the socialization process children begin to associate the differences seen in people between the ages of six and seven at this point stereotypes are embedded in ones worldview Stereotypes are preconceptions about a people group based on biases and false impressions This is important because the child is not capable of morally sifting through perceptions yet therefore each absorbs and associates in an overly simplistic manner The meaning of related bundles are socially conditioned and learned as children are taught that there are lesser beings in society that are to be either feared or neglected The bundles include friend versus foe and danger versus safety First a key factor is socialization or letting ones upbringing such as family or media teach and propagate prejudice Conformity or participating in discriminatory behavior because those around oneself are doing it as well is another detrimental factor Additionally the idea of us versus them leads to a build-up of prejudice Institutional racism is also evident when abused in higher organizations such as government Simplistically speaking culturally conditioned associations create prejudice which results
