At a young age boys and girls begin to be influenced by the media onhow their bodies should look According to an alarming study onchildrens self-image done in 1991 42 of 1st-3rd grade girls want tobe thinner Collins 199 These children begin to feel inadequatecompared to what beauty is portrayed as in the media causing many ofthem to compensate by developing an eating disorder Bulimia nervosaone of the three eating disorders is caused by binge-eating followed bypurging People thrive to have the perfect body and for some thatequates to a slim figure Unfortunately when people pursue this idealfigure to the extreme they develop eating disorders in this casebulimia nervosa and it becomes a disease that can cause unintendedhealth issues There are many severe medical consequences and sideeffects to bulimia nervosa however very few of the people diagnosedseek treatment In todays society people are obsessed with the thoughtof perfection however the pursuit of this perfection has provento do much more harm than good Unfortunately bulimia nervosa is rarely reported or treated for mostpeople This is largely due to the difficulty of identifying people whoare afflicted by the disease Those with bulimia nervosa may often bedifficult to identify because they maintain a normal body weight Eatingdisorders are more easily noticed by a person who is far too underweightor overweight It is much rarer for a victim of bulimia nervosa to begiven medical help than a person with anorexia nervosa or binge-eatingdue to the family or friends of the victim noticing the disorder intime Purging is also usually done in secret thus making it difficultto prove that a patient may be bulimic Signs that one may be a victiminclude anxiety and fear of gaining weight excessive exercise misuseof laxatives eating until the point of discomfort and frequent tripsto the bathroom This lack of treatment leads to adverse health issuesattributed to the disorder Awareness of the disease is an essentialtool in countering it and protecting the health
