Foreign aid fulfils an invaluable role in lifting millions of people out of poverty in building government institutions and in pioneering new ideas for development yet African countries continue to live in poverty Why Over fifty years have passed since most African nations have gained their independence Since then and despite the disbursement of over 1 trillion in aid poverty has increased according to the World Bank Figures show that over 485 million Africans are in poverty and to which we can add 46 million who according to the World Bank will be driven into poverty by the current recession Mwabu This makes for about 50 percent of the population Western governments and Aid agencies have had half a century to show they can deal with these problems and all they have succeeded in doing is making them much worse They have fueled civil war and unrest However it is important to recognize that aid alone cannot create the ideas ambition and opportunities necessary to transform the worlds poorest economies Foreign aid is a necessity but an insufficient solution to poverty we should look toward a long term solution such as the development of rural regions MohamedAfrica seems to show some progress and everyone seems to see this as a new dawn for the continent but the progress is short lived If we continue to that out efforts is not having the effect that we want then we need to make changes to improve our solution for this issue After the Second World War Japan took very few years to catch up with the West from a situation of complete devastation and without anything like the natural resources of Africa Again in only a few decades China went from an African level of poverty to possibly ending up financially owning the whole World Therefore if Africans have the resource that these countries did not why have they not also improved the financial situation The problem
