If there is no fear that by no longer being able to take for granted the subject its gender its sex or its materiality feminism will founder it might be wise to consider the political consequences of keeping in their place the very premises that have tried to secure our subordination from the start Butler 1995 p54IntroductionThe introduction of postmodern thoughts into feminism led many feminists to review most of the concepts they had taken for granted for many years for instance issues such as sex gender identity materiality the necessity of political action the priority of some voices such as feminist theorist and political leaders over others are among them This became coincided with empowerment and recognition of those whose voices were not in the position to be heard Women of color homosexuals and non-western women are part of this group who were totally categorized as others or at the best were treated as homogenized groups This sorts of categorization invoked criticism among these groups of women who believed that feminist politics not only had deviated from its ideal - womens emancipation but also is unable to represent all womens interests For example as Nancy Hartsock 1989 points out throughout the eighties mainstream feminism in North America were accused by radical women of color of not reflecting all womens voices Their main point of arguments was that feminism at both levels of theory and praxis narrates the story of white-western middle class woman and excludes others For example for a long time feminist theories assumed a division between the private world of the family on the one hand and the public life on the other In response to these long established division of public and private Black feminists showed that there is no private world of life in Black communities protected from state intervention ibid These sorts of criticism along with the introduction of postmodern thoughts to gender studies
