The story Watching and Waiting by Morley Callaghan the mainconflict leads to the big idea of how women are being portrayed and howthey are weaker than men This becomes the outcome to destroy therelationship between the two persons This can be demonstrated easilythrough Mrs Hilliards wife character Her character tells us thatshe is voiceless helpless and intimidated Firstly we can say about Mrs Hilliard that she is voiceless simpleand innocent character without much explanations and this shows the weakside of her character Thomas cannot stop spying on her and beingsuspicious of her acquaintances which effects their relationship anddestroys his trust in her She is portrayed as such a good livelyperson who is unaware of the negative thinking of her husband Forexample when he heard her laughing he came running towards her andquestioned about her laughing by yelling at her She surprisingly saidwhat was the matter with the way I laughed This shows her characterthat she could not argue about his question and simply her reaction waslike a quiet voiceless person She didnt know what to say or how toreply on that She was wordless the way her husband stared andquestioned on such a little thing and made a big argument about thatThis proves how men think negatively and underestimate things withoutknowing or asking for the main reasonSecondly setting plays very important part in the short story Itevokes the feelings of characters in the story The story is set atfarmhouse where Mrs Hilliard is alone at the farmhouse and shedescribes the place as dreadfully lonely For example we see writerportrayed her as a scared and helpless person who could never show thecourageous side of her character In addition when her husband shoutedat her angrily and rudely her eyes were full of terror She waslonely scared and helpless This demonstrates her as timidunquestionable person who is unable to argue about the matter Lastly another trait of her personality shows her as scared
