In a recent edition of Health Affairs Dr Joseph West 2013 authored an article which called for both a raised awareness of the prevalence of Bad Suga or Diabetes in a low income Chicago area neighborhood North Lawndale This is a neighborhood in which he grew up in and now lives Dr West uses real life imagery of life experiences that African Americans face while living in low income communities like North Lawndale to communicate the devastation and social isolation that its residents face One of the key purposes of this article was communicate how essential it is that community health educators receive continued to funding to fight spread of type 2 diabetes using methods that reflect the mannerisms of the community he chooses to serve often not sufficiently treated due to a lack of social support and connectedness within the community Dr West demonstrates that providing culturally competent and trained community health to work with individuals one a personal basis greatly helps in fighting the disease as well as promoting social connectedness which helps ensure long term compliance to diabetes care The article closes with a call for additional funding of health education programs It draws on the fact that many barriers prevent individuals living in low income neighbors to receive quality preventive care for type 2 diabetes yet preventative care is often key in improving ones overall health and decreasing long term health costs While the article it does an excellent job demonstrating the need for funding of diabetes community health programs it is a little weak on providing specific details for addressing this area Alternatively Dr West points to the work of his colleague Kenneth Thorpe provided within a separate January 2012 Health Affairs article to address these issuesSummary ParagraphThere are six key tenants of this article The first is Dr West expresses concern over the physical devastation and social isolation that the North
