Bill Laswell once said People are afraid of what they dont understand This quote makes me think of an experience in my life that has been particularly meaningful to me I had the opportunity to babysit Jonathan a child who is diagnosed with aspergers for the entire summer of my junior year I went into this opportunity closed minded and was looking for some extra spending money for the summer time I had never taken the time to understand people with aspergers so I was nervous about how I was going to do this job I remember my first day on the job walking up to the front door Before I could even ring the doorbell a boy a bit tall for his age answered the door and greeted me with a blank stare Behind the boy was a blonde haired woman in her late thirties She reached her hand out and said Hi Im Kathy and this is my son Jonathan Kathy invited me to sit down on the couch in the living room with her and Jonathan During this time she had me describe myself and then she described Jonathan She began to describe certain things Jonathan can and cannot do For example Jonathan cannot handle knives touch the stove walk places by himself etc She also told me some of the activities he enjoys doing as well He loves to sing to Justin Bieber and play his Star Wars video games He also enjoyed watching movies Mrs Kathy also told me that Jonathan would need some help in Algebra Having great grades in math I did not think this would be a problemMy first day alone with Jonathan was a bit awkward People with aspergers do not communicate very well and often do not know what to say I tried my best to make small conversation with him and just get to know him As more days passed Jonathan opened up to
