Henry David Thoreau once wrote Many men go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after One day I hope to find the real truth behind this quote What is it that I am fishing for During my fieldwork an old man named Larry told me this statement and I will never forget it My fieldwork began during spring break in Croton Park on the Hudson River During the month of March till the middle of May fishermen take over the park Croton Park is a wonderful place for fishing BBQs parties walking your dog or a fun game of soccer For about a week my dad and I went fishing where I found four fishermen to interview Some of my expectations that I had before conducting my fieldwork were different after Based on my observations interviews and the friendly conversations I came up with a surprising conclusion Fishermen have different superstitions and beliefs based upon their age Throughout time men have been telling fishing stories that have been passed down from generation to generation We are told about the monstrous like fish that was caught by an ancestor during family gatherings Fishermen have a tendency of exaggerating the truth During my fieldwork I spoke to a 77 year old man named Johnny Johnny is your average retired man who has been fishing since he was 5 years old Johnny has 72 years of fishing stories in him and I had a blast listening to them In the old days we didnt HAVE all these fancy fishing reels and poles with the fancy fake bait I have been using the same 3 fishing poles since I was 23 years old I still use the same old setup and I fish the same spot every year for 56 years Johnny said very openly He used his hands a lot as he talked and I think thats
